After
suffering a tragedy no man should endure, Walter Conrad has given away
everything and lost everything he once prized. He gets through each day the
best way he knows how, and many characters come and go throughout Terminally
Human that are all tied together, in the end, to Walter. Jason Reinders has
dug deep into the mind of a man who had his priorities rearranged and found out
all too late that he was wrong. One mistake cost him everything.
Walter
is a homeless man who was a successful CEO and had enjoyed luxury money could
buy. Throughout the narrative, readers learn through flashbacks about Walter’s
life before he was homeless when he lived with his wife and daughter. The
dichotomy of Walter’s then and now personas is striking, and readers will wish
they could reach through the book and shake Walter to convince him that he’s
making the incorrect choices in life.
A
young girl is murdered, and a crazy cat lady, Ms. Rowe, entertains her amused
neighbors with her leashed felines. Hank and Benny are scam artists that find
themselves in the middle of a murder investigation, one of them succumbing to
retaliation in the process. Billy is Walter’s former employer whom he fired in
the heat of the moment. Billy’s home life isn’t anything he would wish on
anyone, and his issues with Walter send him on a rampage, bringing revenge to
Walter in a terrifying manner.
Terminally Human displays the intricate
details of the life of a homeless man who finds meaning in the simplicity of
living off of the streets. In his mind, he has a place to sleep, he is warm,
and for the most part he can find food. Jason Reinders shows periods of
Walter’s own troubled childhood and what made him the man he became in
adulthood, proving that he wasn’t always the selfish man he became.
The
psyche is on display in this heart-wrenching, suspenseful novel filled with
love, loss, and revenge, following multiple characters on a journey that all
come together in the end in various situations. Jason’s ability to hold them
together and allow the connection to blossom is expert, and the dramatic plot
is simply a backdrop to his storytelling ability. His imagery and buildup are
just enough to get the reader’s blood pumping in preparation for the intense
action. Terminally Human is an in-depth novel to which everyone can
relate.
