A
woman’s past haunts her for her entire adult life, and she attempts to avenge
the violence bestowed on her in Coney Island at the hands of Charles. His
violent reaction to unwanted news about a pregnancy sets the course for Grace’s
life as she leaves broken families behind in the early 1900s, avenging her way
from one husband to the next carrying a barren body and soul. Spider Webs
chronicles the journey of a few men who seek revenge on the woman who stole their
loved ones decades earlier. Jason Reinders fashions a novel out of pain and
sadness, transforming a reader’s guilt into ultimate submission to the victims’
justice in a suspenseful web of twists and turns.
Decades
after Grace’s attack, readers find her emotionless upon learning about the
death of her husband. Jason immerses readers into her history, and the mystery
of her present state is left to speculation and will unravel throughout the
rest of the novel. The anger readers will feel about what was done to Grace
will start to disappear as the narrative unfolds and reveals even more victims
in her past.
John,
the sheriff in a small town, is indulging in narcotic ecstasy when he is
summoned to deal with a robbery-turned-hostage situation in town. It goes awry,
and he’s praised for killing the convict, avenging a little girl’s murder when
it was really his gun that accidentally sealed her fate. John leaves town and
his position as sheriff and sets off into the wilderness to find his
sister-in-law, Grace, with retaliation on his mind.
A
change in Grace’s character many years later presents an interesting turn of
events where locals suspect her to be responsible for her husband’s death,
which appears to be an accident. Grace doesn’t waste any time finding a new
love interest in Delbert Cooper. A group of men stumble upon the skeletons of
more than one person on Grace’s former farm, and the speculation mounts with
fear for her final lover quickly becoming justified.
Readers
will piece together the puzzle about Grace and her continuous quest for
satisfaction for the abuse that she suffered at Charles’ hands, all the while
hoping that what they’re learning about her just isn’t true. Jason Reinders’
ability to present multiple characters in each chapter and then tie them
together in the end is unmatched. Spider Webs will enrage readers but
also pull at their heartstrings, allowing that little bit of sympathy to eke
out in the final scene. A woman’s life is wasted, all because of one night and
one man…and she spends the rest of her life making sure it doesn’t happen
again.
